Amidst the financial collapse of the auto industry in 2008, Toyota was caught unprepared and with its proverbial pants down. At the time they were using an Edwards Deming influence manufacturing process which allowed them to build up to eight different cars on the same assembly line. This process was actually way out of control for what was taking place. This form of production and assembly was extremely expensive and caused the company to bleed fortunes away for several months and caused the leadership at Toyota to be frightened and find a way to regain their profits. When I first saw the advertisement that Toyota had placed on Digg.com, I was skeptical. After all, Digg and most social news sites in general are not considered a “PR venue” to help in times of crisis.
