While DIGG and StumbleUpon seem to kill all the submissions from new users/new domains, not allowing any promotion for such sites, reddit seems to give us a chance.

I have sucessfully attracted thousands of visitors from reddit to several pages during the launch by serving quality content (which got highly uppvoted too, so it wasnt't spam after all). I would highly recommend becoming a real reddit user, and only then attempting to promote your site there.

The basic cause of spamming is advertising by different companies and especially those who do not want to spend money for this purpose.

It's the same for me with Stumbleupon. What I consider to be a decent post receives no attention at all, whereas I have a handful of pages that for some reason get picked up and I get thousands of page views a day. They then lose all their traffic, until one day BOOM thousands more page views. While the traffic is nice to have though, those visitors barely spend any time on my site and soon leave, so no clicks or browsing through more pages, which is disappointing. After 2 or more years I still fail to understand Stumbleupon, however I have come across some good people and some good sites through it.

Digg I never did get anywhere with. I agree that it's an elitist site, and rarely submit there any more. Delicious I don't think I have ever got any traffic from at all.

Tagfoot is proving to be a really good site for traffic, and so far it is practically spam free. A set of moderators constantly check the site for spam sites and accounts, and flush them away, so I highly recommend trying this site if you are looking for somewhere different to promote your sites.

@Felipe
Privacy is worth more than Digg or Reddit.

StumbleUpon's biggest mistake was moving from a toolbar to framejacking (HTML frames with su.pr). There will be a webmaster backlash against framejacking.
